CHAPTER 20
DAVID
Weâd done it. Weâd crossed a line we couldnât come back from. But with Catâs warm body pressed against mine, I couldnât bring myself to regret it. Not yet anyway.
The clock on the nightstand glowed the time in pale blue numerals. I watched them tick by as she slept and tried to figure out what the hell we were going to do next. What new rules could we put in place? What consequences would matter enough to stop us? Weâd had every reason not to find ourselves in this position in the first place, and none of them had mattered enough.
The trouble wasâthere was no clear way forward. I couldnât fire her because I wanted to sleep with her. She would hate me, and Lily would never understand. But I couldnât date a woman on my payroll. Even if she wasnât an employee of my company, and I didnât have an HR department to tell me so, it was intrinsically wrong.
The only smart choice was to end it now before it got more complicated.
I stayed awake all night. I was no stranger to operating on little to no sleep. When I was building my company, all nighters had been par for the course. When Lily was born, I was the one who walked the halls with her at night, soothing her back to sleep. It had been a while since Iâd seen the sun come up, but it was still a familiar sight. The windows lightning behind the curtains. The warble of bird song as watery gray light filled the room.
Cat shifted beside me, and I knew the moment she opened her eyes because she went very still beside me. I turned to look at her and found her smiling.
âYou stayed,â she whispered.
âI told you I would.â
There was a tense undercurrent to my voice that made the smile slide from her face. She pushed up on one elbow and looked down at me. âAnd youâve spent all night thinking about what a bad idea it was,â she guessed.
âNot all night.â
She blew out her breath in a disappointed sigh. âDavid, itâs done. I know itâs complicated, but weâre both consenting adults. Canât we justâ¦enjoy it?â
I couldnât help laughing grimly at that. âCat, if you donât think I enjoyed it, youâre still delirious.â
She smiled again, encouraged by my laughter. âThen canât you stop running the numbers on all the ways this could be a mistake and just have fun?â She sat up, too, light dawning in her eyes. âLetâs make new rules.â
I raised my eyebrows skeptically. âYou mean because the first set worked out so well?â
âYou created the loophole,â Cat reminded me, nodding her chin toward the discarded twist of black fabric on the floor. âWe wonât do that this time. And these will be rules we can actually follow because theyâll allowâ¦â she bit her lip and trailed her finger down my leg. The light scrape of her nail on my skin activated every nerve in my body. âBenefits,â she finished.
